Gippsland Ports is proud to announce the successful completion of a major hydrographic survey covering the entirety of Lake Wellington. This survey represents the final piece in a comprehensive mapping project for the Gippsland Lakes, marking the most thorough examination of the lakes to date.

Conducted over a period of 8 months, the survey employed two personal watercraft equipped with state-of-the-art echosounders and positioning systems. The team ran over 1,500 kilometres of survey lines collecting cross-sectional data at 100-meter intervals, resulting in a detailed map of the lake’s underwater topography.

“The completion of this survey is a major achievement for Gippsland Ports and for the community,” said Chris Waites, CEO at Gippsland Ports. “While the data will enhance safe navigation and waterway management, it also offers other significant benefits. The detailed information will aid in environmental monitoring and conservation efforts, contributing to the long-term sustainability of this vital waterway.”

The data gathered during this historic survey is now publicly accessible via Gippsland Ports’ “Waterways Online” web map.
