The Port of Corner Inlet
The Port of Corner Inlet and Port Welshpool is the second largest of the
five Gippsland Ports. It encompasses the water from the tip of Wilsons Promontory to
McLaughlin's Beach at the Western end of Ninety Mile Beach. It includes Barry Beach, Port
Welshpool and Port Albert.
The Port is easily reached by road and is adjacent to the historic town of
Foster and the Wilsons Promontory National Park. Most of the waters of the Port are
encompassed within Victoria's largest Marine Park, Nooramunga.
As well as providing for the needs of amateur and professional fishermen
and leisure boating, the Port has facilities for small commercial coastal craft.
Vessels with a draught of up to 5.5 metre can use the Port at any state of
the tide (subject to swell conditions). 5.5 metre is available alongside at the Esso
terminal, 5 metre depth is available at the Port Welshpool Shipping Pier and 3 metre at
the Ferry berth and Marginal Wharf.
A ferry terminal was built in 1991 and used for the Seacat ferry service
between Port Welshpool and Georgetown, Tasmania until 1993. The facilities remain and
negotiations are underway to resume the service in the near future.
The Port includes the Barry Beach base for the Esso/BHP oil and gas rigs
in the Bass Strait. This facility is reached from the ocean via Corner Inlet Entrance and
Toora Channel.
