Each of these ports are steeped in history and in the early days of
European settlement were important centres for trade and communications.
Located in the beautiful and unspoilt Gippsland Region of Victoria, they
are now an important part of Australia's Fishing Industry and the growing Victorian
Tourism Industry.
Gippsland Ports is responsible for the management and
control of the five (5) Gippsland Regional Ports and
Waterway Manager for Shallow Inlet and Lake
Tyers, previously administered by the Port of Melbourne Authority.
They cover 1431 square kilometres
of water and are spread over 1555
kilometres of coastline, from Anderson Inlet on the Western side of Wilsons
Promontory to Mallacoota on the N.S.W. border, a distance
of 400 kilometres East to West.
In 1996 Gippsland Ports was set up as a Local Authority providing a
regional service to the local community, visitors and other user groups.
Gippsland Ports works closely with other authorities and organisations
such as the Shires, DSE and DPI, EPA, Tourism Victoria (Lakes and Wilderness),

the Marine Act in these ports.
